Back in the saddle (and a birthday).

August 30th, 2007 by Progressive Wednesday

First thing’s first: we’re back. After taking some time off to enjoy the summer, a wedding, progressive friends and family, and the fine, fine beaches of “The First State,” we’re back in the saddle full-time, daddy-o. Thanks for sticking it out with us — we won’t disappoint.

Second thing’s second (though it should be first): a birthday. A good friend and avid reader of Progressive Wednesday is celebrating her birthday today. We got her something, but she’s gonna have to wait a few days on it thanks to the not-so-natural lag of the postal service. Anyhow, we thought about shooting her an e-card with dancing orangutans chanting the Patty-and-Mildred-Hill-inked tune of birthday tunes. But an e-card is to celebration as the finger is to professional courtesy.

So, here’s the best we can do for today. Give a few clicks below, and we’ll spin a pair of tunes for those of you who’ve stuck with us and those of you hitting 32. Why? Because, as these songs remind us, art is always one of our best bets at saying something nice.

Here’s one of my fave bands (Okkervil River) kicking it two nights ago on Conan O’Brien, singing a song about movies. (Thanks to a reader for pointing this sucker out.)

And this one needs no explanation.
