Relying on your government can give you a headache brain tumor

In case you needed more proof that we can’t rely on politicians, regardless of their party affiliation, here it is, courtesy of The Buffalo News:
Gov. Eliot L. Spitzer on Wednesday vetoed a bill aimed at limiting the siting of hazardous waste facilities in New York… The proposed legislation would have prohibited the siting of a hazardous waste landfill in an area with the potential to discharge into the Great Lakes system.
We’ve written about this legislation a few times before; you can check it out here and here. It passed the State Senate unanimously and received only 11 “nay” votes in the assembly. But it met the same end at the governor’s desk, this time with an “environmentally-friendly” democrat using the veto pen.
Fortunately, there is still the possibility that the veto will be overridden by the state legislature. While Governor Spitzer did not listen to our calls and letters of support for the bill, hopefully our Senators and Assemblypersons will.
You might think, given the overwhelming support in the state legislature while passing the bill through the first time, that it will be easily overridden. But many legislators get cold feet when asked to vote against a governor’s veto. That’s why an override failed after former Governor Pataki’s veto. That’s also why it’s so important to let your state representatives know that, if the hope to get your support in the future, they have to make the right decision today. So call your Senators and Assemblypersons today.
Whether you live near the Great Lakes or not, let’s all agree that we have a responsibility to keep them free of toxins that can and have sickened and even killed so many. It’s time for a cleanup.
