It’s not right to hunt endangered animals

July 16th, 2007 by Eric

I’m an animal lover. Domesticated or wild, cute, slimy, two-legged or more, common or rare, big or small, beautiful, or even ugly, I believe that they all have as much right as anyone to live on our planet, with as little human interference as is necessary for them to thrive.

So when I got wind of the fact that the Gray Wolf is about to be taken off the endangered species list, and subsequently losing the protections provided, I got a little bothered. It has been on the list for over a decade now, and has made a significant comeback. But a new special rule dealing with the Gray Wolf to replace the one that expires in August will is much less restricting.

I looked up the proposal, which is supported by many in Congress and the White House, and the main point of it is to redefine what constitutes an “unacceptable impact” that wolves have on communities in and around Yellowstone National Park. It will make it legal to kill a wolf for just about any reason, even though, according to The International Wolf Center:

Indications are that (wolf) depredation continues to occur on about 1-2% of the 8,500 farms and seems to be decreasing, regardless of population increases.

This new rule will put the Gray Wolf right back to where it was in the early 1990s: nearly extinct. There are two groups that have begun efforts to make sure that this doesn’t happen. Please join me in sending a citizen comment through the Natural Resources Defense Council web page. They have received over 137,000 comments so far, well on their way to their goal of 200,000.

Then follow me (and 43,000 others) to the Defenders of Wildlife page and customize the letter that they have provided. The deadline for comments is August 6, so please sign these forms now.

I leave you with a video to show you exactly what these wolves are up against.
