Organic pants and recycled glass piggy banks

June 15th, 2007 by Eric

I like to do my shopping at local small businesses whenever possible. But as it gets easier and easier to do it on the internet (and the price of gas goes higher and higher), I find myself doing quite a bit of my window shopping through the “window” that sits above my keyboard. And according to Forrester Research, I’m not the only one opting out of shopping malls and department stores; Americans spent $220 billion online in 2006. That’s a lot of “digital dough.”

Because of this boom in online sales (that’s up 25% from 2005), there have been a lot of “shop engines” to come online in recent years. They find whatever you’re looking for in many different online locations and give you the best prices.

But at the same time that we have acquired a taste for online shopping, we have also, as consumers, grown more environmentally conscious. We want to have our organic cake and eat it, too.  Thanks to pricegrabber.com’s “ShopGreen” site, we can. I’ll let them explain it to you:

Shopping and living green doesn’t have to mean sacrificing quality or paying more. This site highlights products that promote smart, sustainable, eco-friendly living. We’re also giving 5% of all profits to a green charity of your choice!

What kinds of things are on the “green list?”

  • Energy Star-compliant products
  • Products made from organic or recycled materials
  • Products made from eco-friendly materials including hemp, bamboo, soy, and seagrass
  • Biodegradable products and compost bins
  • Products with low usage of natural resources
  • Products made by noted environmentally-conscious companies like Patagonia

So if you’re a regular user of “shop engines” in general or pricegrabber.com in particular, consider using the “ShopGreen”  section of the site. And don’t forget to chose the charity you want them to donate to. Maybe use it to get Dad an EnergyStar-rated plasma TV for Father’s Day. Too much? (I don’t think so.) How about those recycled golf balls or that organic polo shirt. He’ll look good in “green,” even if the shirt is blue.
