Because music sooths the savage progressive (w/Mom’s Day in mind).

May 13th, 2007 by Matt

As you know, at Progressive Wednesday we like to bring you news hidden on the back pages, factoids and events flying under that proverbial radar. But art flies low, too. Too low, really. And so today allow us to share with you some tunes by musicians who rarely make it onto our airwaves (or, thankfully, onto MTV).

First up, one of those bands whose albums I loved to spin back when I deejayed in college: They Might be Giants. The band’s songs are nostalgic to me for another reason: my sis and I saw them in concert together, and if memory serves, it was the first rock show we shared. You might know TMBG from the TV show Malcolm in the Middle: they sung the theme song, “Boss of Me.”

I sometimes think of the 80s as the decade music forgot, but here’s “Ana Ng,” a tune circa 1988 about soul-mates that never meet. Give it a whirl and be prepared to pop and rock.

Every once in a while, I start to think I have an unhealthy adoration of Neko Case, but then I listen to her haunting voice and heart-altering lyrics, and I realize my reaction is exactly right. I recently saw her perform live at Calvin College in Grand Rapids (the one in the Great Lakes State), and I was blown away.

Below you can take a gander and listen to her strumming it live on the Late Show with David Letterman, singing “Maybe Sparrow,” one of my favorite tunes on her latest release, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood.

And since today is Mother’s Day, and since we love our mothers here at Progressive Wednesday (and because we also love our brothers and sisters and fathers), below you’ll find someone’s homemade video for Golden Smog’s tune “Please Tell My Brothers.” Happy Mom’s Day to all those mothers and grandmothers (who, you know, are also mothers by default) out there!
