Sky Blue Sky, Baby

May 6th, 2007 by Matt

Okay, you knew this was coming, people. Wilco, the band that got me through many patches far rougher than sandpaper, the band that our photo editor and I stalked followed around through four states*, the band that leaves my iTunes confused if I don’t play them, that band, the one fronted by lead-singer, ax-slinger and lyricist extraordinaire, Jeff Tweedy, that band is dropping a new record on us come May 15.

So, why the post? Because the band’s letting one and all listen to the sucker “rooter to tooter,” as they say on the farms my neighbor’s run. In other words, you can listen to the whole thing for free, my rockin’ friends.

This album brings the band closer to its original country and folk roots, but with touches of guitar solos reminiscent of 70s southern rock and surprising bridges that don’t fit within the norms of modern rock. There are inventive lyrics that touch deep into the recesses of our sometimes lonely, sometimes loving hearts, but there are also lyrics about the everyday “stuff” that happens around us, both outside and inside our controls.

Here are some choice and sage words from “What Light”:

If you feel like singing a song
And you want other people to sing along
Just sing what you feel
Don’t let anyone say it’s wrong

And if you’re trying to paint a picture
But you’re not sure which colors belong
Just paint what you see
Don’t let anyone say it’s wrong

This is an album with hope. This is an album I’ve been waiting for. Enjoy it by clicking this sentence.
